Ship's log

Our lofi cat now lives in 28 worlds, and it chases a mouse

Key takeaways

Two scenes from Lofi Worlds. On the left, a black cat outlined in green neon walks toward a red ball of yarn on a rainy city sidewalk. On the right, a cat in a bubble helmet hugs a ball of yarn while tethered to an astronaut floating near a black hole.

Cats and lofi go together, so Lofi Worlds has a lofi cat. It started out in the Between Worlds cabin, and now it lives in 28 of our 29 worlds. It naps on window sills, paces the console, knocks mugs off tables and chases its yarn while the music plays. If you're new here, start with what Lofi Worlds is.

Where the lofi cat lives

Each world gives the cat its own spot.

The Wormhole is the only world without it, since the freighter there is too far away to fit a cat.

Throw the yarn

Grab the red ball of yarn with your mouse, or your finger on a phone, and throw it. The cat stalks it, wiggles, pounces and bats it around, and sometimes it carries the yarn off in its mouth. By the black hole the yarn floats away in a straight line and the cat paddles after it, until the tether runs out and all it can do is watch the yarn drift off.

The mouse

Every so often a mouse runs into the scene. The cat chases it all over the world, and the mouse always slips away through a vent or a gap under the console. Then the cat sits down and washes as if nothing happened. It happens about once every half hour in a world. To see a chase right now, open Mercury Dawn with the mouse switched on and it starts a few seconds in.

Cats in space

The space cat is a nod to Félicette, who became the first cat to reach space when France launched her on a sounding rocket on October 18, 1963.

Frequently asked questions

What is a lofi cat?

A lofi cat is the cat that lives in a lofi music scene, napping by the window while the beats play. On Lofi Worlds it's an animated pixel-art cat you can play with.

Do cats like lofi music?

Cats seem to care more about music made for them. In a 2015 study, researchers played music to 47 cats in their own homes, and the cats responded more to songs built on the tempo of purring and nursing, pitched about an octave higher, than to classical music.

Can I play with the cat?

Yes. In any world with the cat, grab its ball of yarn and throw it. It works with a mouse or a finger.

Does the cat ever catch the mouse?

No. It gets close every time, and the mouse always escapes.
