Halloween lofi, also called spooky lofi, is slow, instrumental music with an eerie mood, the kind people put on while they decorate or work late in October. Ours is a set of 20 original songs. When Lofi Worlds members switch on the Halloween theme, our Between Worlds ship dresses up too, and a new world called Haunted Voyage flies it past real places like the Witch Head Nebula and the Skull Nebula.
The 20 songs in our Halloween lofi set
Our Halloween lofi is dark and slow, like the rest of our music. Every song is instrumental, and the set runs 65 minutes, at about three minutes a song.
In alphabetical order, the titles are "Abandoned Cathedral", "Candlelight in Hangar Nine", "Cornfield Abduction", "Creaking Hull Static", "Dead Satellite Lullaby", "Derelict Hull", "Fading Hull", "Ghost Signal From Europa", "Last Transmission, October 31", "Lights Over the Cornfield", "Missing Time", "Pumpkin Moon Over Titan", "Requiem for the Night Shift", "Something Knocks Outside the Airlock", "The Bell Rings in Vacuum", "The Cat Hears It First", "The Hull Is Breathing", "They Took the Scarecrow", "Vespers on a Dead Ship" and "Voices in the Static".
Switch on Halloween and the whole set joins your songs list and the shuffle in every world, each song marked "halloween set". To hear only Halloween songs, open the songs list and pick the "halloween 20" tab. Choose any song there and the set shuffles on repeat until you press stop or pick a song from another tab.
The ship dresses up for Halloween
Between Worlds is the world where our ship jumps from Saturn out to distant nebulas and galaxies, and it's the only one of our 29 worlds that changes its look for Halloween. With the theme on, three jack-o'-lanterns glow on the console and in the corner of the sill, next to a candle and a bowl of candy. Orange and purple string lights run along the top of the window. There are cobwebs in three corners, and every so often a small spider drops down on its thread. Bats fly past outside, and now and then a faint ghost drifts by.
Inside, three little ghosts float by the window and the pilot's mug becomes a skull mug. The cabin cat gets a tiny witch hat and glowing eyes, and its yarn turns orange. The hyperspace tunnel goes orange and purple too. It all fades in over about a second when you switch it on. The plain ship is free to ride any time in Between Worlds.
Haunted Voyage, ten real places with spooky names
Haunted Voyage is a world just for members. It's the same ship, dressed for Halloween all the time, on a loop through these ten places.
- the Witch Head Nebula
- the Skull Nebula
- the Lich, a dead star with three planets
- the Cat's Eye Nebula
- the Witch's Broom Nebula
- the Tarantula Nebula
- the Black Eye Galaxy
- the Flying Bat, with the Squid Nebula inside it
- the Ghost of Jupiter, a nebula that looks about as wide as Jupiter in our sky
- Fear and Dread, our stop at Mars, whose moons Phobos and Deimos (Greek for fear and dread) are named for the sons of Ares
The ship stays about a minute at each place and jumps every 75 seconds, so the whole loop takes 12 and a half minutes. Every jump shows a HAUNTED VOYAGE title and a ticker of facts about the ten places, and each stop has a readout of its own. At the Witch Head, the cloud shines with light from Rigel, the bright blue star beside it. Its dust reflects blue light better than red, much as the air in our daytime sky does.
To stay at one place, press the park button in the player bar, just under the world's name. The ship waits there as long as you like, and the same button, now labeled voyage, sends it on from that place. Each place also has a world of its own with the ship already parked there. They're in the worlds list under Halloween, right after Haunted Voyage.
How to switch on Halloween
- Open the account page. If you're signed in, clicking your callsign at the top left of the player opens it in a new tab.
- Join or sign in. To join, pick a callsign on the Membership card, press "Join $3.00 / month" and pay on the checkout page. Members sign in with Google or a link we email them. If you have a free account, sign in the same way and press Join on the Membership card.
- On the Theme card, press Halloween. The player changes right away, with no reload.
- Open worlds and pick Haunted Voyage from the Halloween group, or open songs and pick the "halloween 20" tab.
The setting is saved in your browser, so press Halloween once in each browser you listen in. To turn it off, press Default on the same card. The Halloween songs leave the list and the shuffle, and the ship goes back to normal.
Halloween study music with no lyrics
Halloween falls in midterm season, and the set works as study music. All 20 songs are instrumental, so there are no words to follow while you read. Keep the volume low. Pick a song in the "halloween 20" tab and the set shuffles on repeat all evening. It keeps playing while you work in another browser tab.
If the jumps on Haunted Voyage distract you, park the ship at one place. It stays there until you press the voyage button.
What stays free
Everyone gets all 29 worlds and the 31 regular songs, about 104 minutes of music, for free, with no ads and no sign-up. Any song plays in any world. Our post on space lofi music covers the free worlds and what you can do in them.
The membership is $3 a month, and the about page sums up what it adds. Besides Halloween, members can heart songs to keep a list of favorites and build their own playlists, which play in order or on shuffle. You can cancel any time from the account page, and you keep the membership until the end of the month you've paid for.
Frequently asked questions
What is Halloween lofi music?
Halloween lofi is lofi music with a spooky mood, usually slow and instrumental, for October nights. On Lofi Worlds it's a set of 20 original songs for members, with titles like "Ghost Signal From Europa" and "Vespers on a Dead Ship".
Is Halloween lofi good for studying?
Yes, if it's instrumental. A 2018 review of 65 studies on background sound and reading found that music with lyrics hurt reading comprehension about as much as nearby talking, while instrumental music made almost no difference. All 20 of our Halloween songs are instrumental.
What is some relaxing Halloween music?
Halloween lofi works well. Ours is slow and has no lyrics, so it stays in the background while you do other things. It shuffles on repeat, with no ads, for as long as you leave it on.
Is Halloween lofi free?
On Lofi Worlds, the Halloween songs and the haunted ship come with the membership, which is $3 a month. All 29 worlds and the 31 regular songs are free, with no sign-up.
